A word from our President…

Hello and welcome to our website – we’re delighted that you found us!

I was recently voted in as President of the Edinburgh Gilbert and Sullivan Society, taking on the huge challenge (alongside my fellow council members) of ensuring the continued success of our wonderful company. I’ve been regularly performing with EDGAS since 2010 and have found not only some lifelong friends, but a real passion for the works of Gilbert and Sullivan.

My appreciation for G&S came in my adulthood, specifically in 2010 when I went along to The Kings Theatre to watch EDGAS’s production of ‘Patience’. I was supporting a friend, who’d I’d recently performed in another operetta with, and had no idea what to expect. You see, I didn’t learn about Gilbert or Sullivan at school. I knew nothing about the wit and wordsmithery of Gilbert or the character and lusciousness of Sullivan’s scores. I thought G&S was meant for other people, but I was so wrong! G&S really is for everybody – it’s fun, silly, but also hugely touching. The melodies are marvellously memorable, and many of the plots and characters allow us to see the absurdities in our society! It’s quintessentially British, in that it pokes fun and that is one of the reasons why it’s so accessible. From the classic parody sketches of The Two Ronnies to current hits like ‘Family Guy’, G&S is still a highly recognisable style that has been influencing artists/writers/singers for years and we’re keen to see that continue.

If you’d like to learn more about our society and talk about the possibility of joining us for our next production, please reach out!

Thanks

Gillian
