Edinburgh G & S Society
"The Pirates of Penzance"
13 - 17 March 2007
Director:
Alan Borthwick
Musical Director: David Lyle
A lot of people say
that one production of G&S opera is very like another, but on this occasion that
statement was proved very wrong. With a cleverly conceived opening sequence in
which the Pirate King was seen to be fighting a full size cut-out of Johnny Depp,
through to a guest appearance of Orlando Bloom, also a full size cut-out, this
production went from strength to strength as the evening progressed.
Ian Lawson
as the Pirate King kept us in stitches throughout. His little lapses into the
Johnny Depp character were well controlled.
Fiona Main as Mabel was in good voice,
while Darren Coutts as Frederick
was truly convincing, baring his chest to all the ladies for most of Act 1.
(Like the Lycra tight trousers, Darren!)
Scott Thomson gave us a strong
performance as Major General Stanley, and
Susanne Horsburgh (Ruth) and
Simon Boothroyd (the Sergeant of
Police) completed the line up of principals. With strong, well drilled chorus
this was a very enjoyable production.
