Ruddygore
As you will notice from the spelling of the show title, "Ruddygore"
with a "y" this evening was going to be something quite different. The company had decided
to go back to the original 1887 version of the opera and had reinstated musical numbers that had
been excised somewhere along the line during the 1920s. Admirable performances were given by Neil
French (Robin), Fiona Main (Rose), Alan Borthwick (Dick Dauntless), Liz Landsman (Mad Margaret),
with Ian Lawson (Despard), Richard Bourjo (Roderick), and Maureen McMahon (Hannah). David Lyle's
direction of the singing and conducting of the orchestra were of his usual high standard. The
settings, designed and built by Bill Hume, were superb, especially the Act 2 setting with its vision
panels. The G & S Chorus always come up trumps, and on this occasion helped to make this for me
a memorable production.
