REVIEW: The Grand Duke - King's
DESPITE some, presumably first night,
problems with cohesion and timing, Edinburgh's Gilbert and Sullivan Society
revive the rarely performed "The Grand Duke" with some success.
Apart from the splendid costumes in this Alan Borthwick production, there is the
solid performance of Graham Addison as the usurping Arch-Duke.
We should feel indebted, most, for the English duo's uncanny premonition of
Nicholas Fairbairn in the shape of Grand-Duke Rudolph, played by Maxwell Smart.
While "The Grand Duke" lacks the obvious appeal of the better-known pieces,
there are the customary convolutions of plot and ever-so-gentle digs at the
English Establishment.
